A full load in general is the amount necessary to fill an entire semi-trailer or intermodal container. A truckload carrier is a trucking company that contracts an entire trailer-load to a single customer as oppose to a less-than truckload (LTL). One of the advantages of Full Truckload carrier is that the freight does not stop while in transit. They deliver the load with the same truck as it was picked up, versus an LTL shipment that will typically be transported on several different trailers. Furthermore, when shipping your merchandise as a full load you have the option of sealing the truck, so you can be sure that the load is secure, in opposition to an LTL shipment where you need to count the boxes or make sure that the skids are intact in order to know that you received the full amount shipped.
It is important to note, because truckload carriers are asked to ship a wide variety of items, a truckload carrier will often specialize in moving a specific kind of freight. Some carriers will primarily transport food and produce items, while other may specialize in moving hazardous materials. Truckers will only transport specific freight because of the different equipments that they have.
